Last Mountain House was constructed in 1869 by the Hudson's
Bay Company to address two concerns:
the company's competition was moving in on its territory
and the buffalo herds were moving southwest.
This post's position provided everything the residents would need.
Nearby trees and white clay were used for construction, grasses
fed the livestock and fish from Last Mountain Lake sustained the
dogs and sometimes the post residents.
The year 1869 was a prosperous one. The post was used as a base
from which to hunt buffalo and trade for dried meat, grease and
pemmican, the necessities of the fur trade. These provisions
or food were then shipped to the company's northern posts.
One good year was all this fort would see. In 1870, the buffalo
herds moved to the far west and never returned. By 1871, Last
Mountain House, like the buffalo hunt, was abandoned. Some time
later it burned and was never replaced.
